STIB to Raise Fares for Most Passengers, Spare Youth and Seniors
Starting September 1st, Brussels public transport operator STIB will implement fare increases for most of its services. This decision comes as part of a budgetary agreement reached with the Brussels-Capital Region last October, aimed at improving STIB’s revenue predictability.
However, not all fares will be affected. Young people under 25 and seniors over 65 will continue to enjoy a discounted annual pass for €12, ensuring that public transport remains accessible for these age groups.
The changes include a ten-cent increase for a single journey, bringing the price to €2.20. Day tickets will rise to €8, while a trip to Brussels Airport will cost €7.50. The popular ten-journey ticket for the airport will see a €3.20 increase, reaching €49.20.
Other fares, such as the taxi bus, school group day tickets, and monthly and annual subscriptions, will also see moderate increases. Overall, the net fare increases amount to 6.9%.
To offset any potential revenue shortfall if the government decides against annual fare indexation, the Brussels-Capital Region has pledged to fully compensate STIB. This arrangement is expected to generate an additional €2.1 million in revenue for the transport operator.
